COMM 310 Core

HTML 5

COMM 310 is a class offered by the Department of Communication at Brigham Young University – Idaho. The title of the class is Creating Online Media. The teacher of the class is Brother Judkins.

As a Communication major, I was in need of two clusters of classes that could compliment my major. One of those was on web design and COMM 310 was one of the classes that I needed to take.

The biggest take away that I had from this class was that you do not use HTML for style. That pretty much became the motto for the class.

This did stand in contrast, though, with what I had been taught previously taught throughout my education. When I was in high school I was a part of the web design competition for SkillsUSA. The site that I used to get 2nd place in that competition definitely did not follow what I have been taught in this current class. The site I developed then relied heavily on frames and Flash to achieve the desired look.

Compared to the CIT 230 class that I am concurrently taking, we focused a lot on CSS and how powerful its use can be. I was able to change my perceptions of style to something that offered a lot more control.

Another unique aspect of the class that I really enjoyed was learning about PHP in the way that we did. In CIT 230 we learned about using PHP to make a site modular and in COMM 310 we built upon that by learning how to make site dynamic with PHP.
